I know you’ve been feeling the angst, the suffering, the profound absence of Jeep shopping news from me.
Well, except for this bit of collective head-nodding this morning.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
...Oh, wait...
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
...it’s only been two days since I provided an update? It feels so much longer. 2020, man.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Well, anyway, yes, I’m still shopping.
I have given up on manual XJs for now, at least until a local one crosses my radar. Trying to grab one a thousand miles away before some local yokel does is too much frustration. Any legit ones sell within four days, at most, and I’m not terribly comfortable throwing $4+k at a random stranger without any independent report on how the Jeep runs, which is effectively what I have to do to make that window work for me.
So instead I’m returning to my second plan, of buying a comfortable Jeep, a first (ZJ) or second (WJ) generation Grand Cherokee. Well, a modified version of my second plan: my original second plan was to buy a Grand Cherokee Overland (WJ), the top-level trim with the most powerful engine and most sophisticated 4WD system.
That happens to be the Jeep that brokenmostweeks is still waffling about whether to sell, and has offered to drive to me if I want to buy it when he decides to sell it.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
However, upon further research , I’ve decided to buy the base-level trim. It won’t be much cheaper, but it does have a slower engine and more primitive 4WD system!
...Wait, that didn’t come out right.
It won’t be much cheaper, but it does have the legendary I6 4.0L engine that should be much more robust, albeit almost painfully slow relative to the top-end engine . The 4.7L HO engine that graced the Overland has a bit of a reputation of crapping out around 150k miles, and good luck finding one with fewer miles than that.
It won’t be much cheaper, but it does have a transfer case with much more granular control. The Overland is always in full-time 4WD, which in essence means that the Jeep decides when front wheels are necessary. That’s fine for mixed conditions, like patchy snow, but if/when I’m off-roading I want to decide for myself when to engage my front axle.
Sadly the Laredo, the base trim I’m chasing, doesn’t have the limited slip differentials that the Overland offers, front and back. But I can add lockers later if I’m so inclined. Nor does it have the awesome 10-CD changer in the back, but sacrifices must be made.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
There are three local WJs under active consideration
. The most likely one (white, blah
) is very clean, needs some transfer case work that the car lot is hopefully tackling this week, and needs to drop about $1000.
I’ll be checking out the third tomorrow, and t here’s also one in North Vernon, Indiana, which happens to be in a part of the state I like very much, so I may make an excursion Saturday. I’ll be staying at my favorite cabin in southern Indiana again, although if anything it’s even further from North Vernon than I am right now. C’est la vie.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
So, as always, let me know if you spot something interesting. boredalways is masterful with his searches, so he’s pretty well got Indiana covered, but frankly there’s never anything truly interesting in Indiana, except that big race each year.

Apparently you haven’t been to NSWC Crane or the Glendora Detachment.
Also, this is an hour and a half away from me, but:

...online for 20 days? It’s pricy, but something must be wrong with it. Not that you could tell from those microscopic photos.
I was actually on my way to a very curvy road, when I realized it was hidden inside Crane, so 200’ from the (a?) north entrance is as close as I’ve ever gotten to seeing it, and instead found this great J2000 nearby.

You should definitely start considering buying a Volvo and calling it a day !

That base-level trim will also alleviate you of the blend-door issues with the automatic climate control.

I was out at the Glendora detachment a few months ago. It was interesting, to say the least.
And yeah, if you look they replaced the axles and some other stuff all very recently. Makes me wonder what it’s like underneath. And yeah, it’s a bit pricey, but it’s pretty close to what you wanted in a Cherokee, I think. I’ll keep my eyes out for one.

A-ha, nice.
The white one does have an obnoxious rattle somewhere around the passenger-side dash that I thought briefly might be problems with the climate control. Hopefully they’ll get that sorted.

You’re going to have to connect the dots for me; what’s the Glendora detachment and how does it relate to Crane?

It’s just a remote site that’s operated by Crane where they do some testing. Usually underwater explosives, but in my case we were yeeting RHIB boats across the lake at absurd speeds for a 1/2 mile wide lake!

AU$13,881... which is top of the market for down here for this sort of thing but the kicker is that it claims just one owner, a fully documented service history (15 documented services in the log book at an average interval of only 3,500 km) and just 52,790 kilometres on the odometer.
Carsales doesn’t have any XJ Jeeps listed at all. I have come across the odd one on other sites but I’d generously refer to them as ‘parts cars’. Very few seem to have survived their 2nd decade...

Agreed. A more typical price is less than half that but for something well used and no longer particularly common. Carsales only has 20 or so WJs listed right across the country so clearly very few survive...

It was included with the Infinity Gold audio system and for most years was optional on the base audio.

Now that the ZJ is in the running, you could also consider the 5.9L Grand Cherokee. But they’re not very common.

That thought has occurred to me, yes. Given how slow the 4.0 is in the WJ it’s quite appealing.

Skip the Jeep and go straight to a bobbed Deuce. Even slower and more primitive!

I have oft wished for one, although I literally would not be able to drive one without power steering. My back is far too damaged.
And then I remember how crazy loud they are, and remember I’m looking for something with less NVH than my LJ, not dramatically more.
